Weird Web October, recapped

This year's Weird Web October came to an end yesterday. Part of me is relieved because trying to come up with something in the form of a website every day was kind of exhausting. Sometimes I couldn't come up with anything until near bedtime. Another part of me is kind of missing it already because I did enjoy the challenge of putting an idea into something people can see or read or interact with. It was fun. I would definitely do it again next year.

Of all the 31 silly web things I came up with last month, I could definitely pick a few favourites, but I could also point you to a bunch that are just plain lazy and/or derivative. But hey, I tried! Unfortunately, some days, the inspiration just wasn't there, or I simply didn't find the theme too inspiring. I'm no AI that could pull anything out of the wazoo. Anyway, these are the 10 creations that I'm the most proud of, for various reasons:

• Filters, where I apply CSS invert filter on some of the world's most famous paintings. Just because.
• Remix, where I turn a beat maker into some kind of animal hell sound maker. I annoyed the crap out of the husband making this.
• Blink, where I recreated a seizure-inducing Geocities GIF page, using GIFs from actual Geocities pages cached by the Wayback Machine.
• Warning, where I turned a theme with a negative undertone into something heartwarming.
• Battle, where I turned cute puffins with punny names into war machines.
• Doubles, where I turned some photos I took over Thanksgiving weekend into double exposure photos with CSS.
• Transition, where I wrote my first haiku in probably over a decade just the fill a negative space on the page.
• Memory, where I put together some memories of living dangerously in Indonesia as a little kid.
• Surprise, where I tried to crowdsource some surprising facts to fill the page, but not very successfully (submission is still open!).
• Spooky, where I wrote down a couple of strange happenings in my life that others might consider spooky but which I just found kind of hard to write.

If you don't have time to check out all 31 of them, at least check out the ones I listed above. Some I'm proud of because of the coding, others because of the idea or the writing. I know I said I hated JavaScript and that I wouldn't use it if I could help it. Well, unfortunately, some things can only be done with JavaScript and I had to use it in a bunch of them. I did learn a little bit more about it and I guess it's not really that bad? I mean, I still hate it, but I wouldn't hesitate to use it if I had to. I also got to refresh my CSS and PHP knowledge, which was great.

All in all, I had fun. I learned a lot. Would do it again. A+++++. (Sorry, eBay joke.)
